I Georges Rouaults liv

Hela livet
  1. 1898

Curator of the Gustave Moreau Museum

After the death of his teacher Gustave Moreau, whose favorite pupil he had been, he was appointed curator of the Moreau Museum in Paris.

  2. 1910

Solo Exhibition at the Galerie Druet

Rouault's first solo exhibition was held at the Galerie Druet in Paris. His painting was studied by the German artists who would later form the core of Expressionism.

  3. 1917

    Contract with Ambroise Vollard

For the artist, who had been living in dire poverty, a contract with the collector and dealer Ambroise Vollard secured decades of material comfort and freedom in his work.

  4. 1924

    Retrospective at the Galerie Druet

A large retrospective exhibition of Rouault was held at the Galerie Druet; in the same year the artist received the Legion of Honor from the French government.

  5. 5 November 1948

Burning of 315 of His Own Works

He took 315 of his sketches and paintings from the Vollard estate to a factory on the outskirts of Paris, where they were burned: the artist did not consider these unfinished works worthy of his standard.
