Om målningen

In this tempera painting, Raymond Jonson used an airbrush to achieve an even, semitransparent distribution of color, free of brushstrokes. The circles, veiled in color and gently shaded, seem to radiate their own inner light. Intersected by crisp, parallel lines that guide the viewer's eye up, these luminous, free-floating orbs evoke the celestial. In 1938 Jonson founded the Transcendental Painting Group with eight other abstract artists working in New Mexico. These painters sought to establish a "new type of sacred art," without resemblance to the visible world and "explosive with universal reality" that would reignite American spirituality in the disillusioned postwar era.
