Om målningen

Grapevines and a drinking cup occupy three putti in Jacob de Wit's Autumn, a grisaille overdoor of 1740 at Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum. They also handle a thyrsus, Bacchus's staff tipped with a pinecone. These objects connect the season to the grape harvest and the god of wine. The panel came from Cornelis Hop's house on Nieuwe Doelenstraat, together with Summer and Winter. All three retain the surrounds made for them. Autumn is displayed in room 1.6, the canal-house room of 1748.

Med museets egna ord

This overdoor, like Winter and Summer elsewhere in this gallery, came from the house of Cornelis Hop in the Nieuwe Doelenstraat in Amsterdam. All three pieces still have their original surrounds. De Wit illustrated Autumn by alluding to the grape harvest. Three putti play with grapevines, a kylix or drinking cup, and a thyrsus, the pinecone-tipped staff of Bacchus, the god of wine.
