Om skulpturen

Daniel Mauch carved Adam around 1535; the small statuette is in the Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland. Each figure in the group was cut from a single block of boxwood. Their bodies reveal close attention to anatomy and a relationship with Dürer’s print of the same subject. Although Mauch worked across medieval and Renaissance traditions, these carvings belong to newer developments in southern German art, connected with bronze sculpture in Germany and Italy. The figure is exhibited in gallery 114, Late Northern Renaissance.

Med museets egna ord

Mauch straddled the late medieval and Renaissance traditions in his career. These small-scale statuettes, however, each made from a single piece of boxwood, stem from the most progressive strands of Renaissance art in southern Germany, closely connected to developments in both Italian and German bronze sculpture. The bodies reveal Mauch's careful study of human anatomy as well as a rapport with Albrecht Dürer's well-known print of the same subject.
