This oval ivory relief was made in about 1860, probably in Italy. The plaque representing the Virgin and Child against a hanging backdrop, with distant landscape visible behind, is inspired by paintings by Giovanni Bellini (ca. 1430-1516). The relief is slightly concave and a thin piece of wood has been attached to the back.
