Luke Fildes was commissioned to provide illustrations for Charles Dickens's last novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Dickens died in 1870, before completing the text.
This is a study for an illustration entitled Sleeping It Off. The published image shows John Jasper lying across a four-poster bed in a London opium den, with an unnamed woman kneeling beside him. Later in the novel, she becomes known as Princess Puffer.
