In 1902, 1903 and 1904 the ethnographic department of the Museum of Alexander III sent Bilibin to the Vologda, Olonets and Arkhangelsk Governorates to study wooden architecture. Old Russian art had a great influence on his work.

Bilibin published the findings of his northern expeditions in the monograph Folk Arts of the Russian North.

  3. 1904

Death of his father, a naval doctor

The artist's father, Yakov Ivanovich Bilibin (1838–1904), a naval doctor, died; by 1900 he had been chief physician of the Naval Hospital of the port of Alexander III in Libau, with the rank of Actual State Councillor.

  4. 1906

A cartoon of the Tsar gets Zhupel banned

During the Revolution of 1905–1907 Bilibin drew revolutionary cartoons, especially for the magazine Zhupel. In 1906 the magazine was banned because of his drawing depicting the Emperor as a donkey.

  5. 1907

A plot by the sea at Batiliman, with Kuprin and Korolenko

Bilibin became one of the shareholders of a plot at Batiliman on the southern coast of Crimea, bought for summer houses by a group of intellectuals including Korolenko, Kuprin, Vernadsky and Ioffe. By lot he received land right by the sea with a fisherman's hut, to which he added a studio, and from then on he went there every year after classes, returning in the autumn.
