This sketchy image, with a bold vertical wash suggesting an approaching rainstorm, closely resembles a more detailed watercolor from Frank Wilcox’s first trip to Paris in 1910. The artist frequented the Luxembourg Gardens during this visit, where he practiced drawing various people and weather patterns. Unusually, this work includes little shading. While he utilized distilled forms indicative of a Post-Impressionist style, Wilcox avoided modernist trends like Fauvism during his trip, although the brightly colored foliage in this image contains elements of that style.
