Sobre a pintura
Jan Matejko painted Stańczyk in 1862; the canvas belongs to the National Museum in Warsaw. The court jester sits alone in a dark room while a ball continues nearby. His distress concerns the loss of Smolensk. Matejko gave the jester his own face, and a letter on the table is thought to carry the news.
