Memoirs written with John Galt
West collaborates with the novelist John Galt on the memoir “The Life and Studies of Benjamin West” (published in 1816 and 1820) and tells him how as a child Native Americans showed him how to make paint by mixing river-bank clay with bear grease.

Dies on Newman Street; declines a knighthood
West dies at his house in Newman Street, London. He had earlier declined a knighthood offered by the Crown, believing that he should instead be made a peer.
