Catherine II orders a marble “Voltaire”
After the philosopher’s death Catherine II acquires a collection of busts of Voltaire of various types, and in 1784, on Baron Grimm’s advice, orders a marble copy of the seated Voltaire. The second marble statue, finished in 1781, reaches Russia at the same time, together with the philosopher’s library bought by the empress from Madame Denis.

Crosses the Atlantic at Franklin’s invitation
At Benjamin Franklin’s invitation he crosses the Atlantic to visit Mount Vernon, where George Washington is to sit for him.

Falls out of favour in the French Revolution
Because of his ties to the court of Louis XVI he is perceived as bourgeois and falls out of favour during the Revolution, though he escapes imprisonment.
