Anverso: En la pradera. Grupo de figuras femeninas cubiertas con pañuelos sentadas en el suelo, en una pradera, tres en el centro y dos a la izquierda. Al fondo dos figuras cargan pesados fardos. Reverso: Tipos populares. Composición enmarcada con tres personajes de busto. A la derecha una figura femenina de perfil a la izquierda, se cubre los hombros con mantón y la cabeza con pañuelo atado en la nuca. Se adorna con pendientes de aro. Frente a ella dos figuras tan solo apuntadas, la de segundo término masculina, vistiendo capa y sombrero de ala ancha. Por la indumentaria podrían tratarse de tipos de León, aunque también guarda cierta similitud con la asturiana.

Grand Prix at the Paris Universal Exposition
“Sad Inheritance”, a huge canvas of crippled children bathing in the sea at Valencia under a monk’s supervision, brought Sorolla his greatest official recognition, the Grand Prix and a medal of honour, and his exhibit as a whole earned him nomination as a Knight of the Legion of Honour. After this picture he never returned to so overtly social a theme.

A medal of honour in Madrid for “Sad Inheritance”
The painting won the medal of honour at the National Exhibition in Madrid. Two of its luminous preparatory oil sketches Sorolla gave as gifts to the American artists John Singer Sargent and William Merritt Chase.
