A trip to Egypt and the “Egyptian palette”
After a visit to Egypt, where she is inspired by colourful hieroglyphic decoration, she creates colours in what she calls her “Egyptian palette”; it marks the start of a new exploration of colour and contrast.

Blocking Thatcher’s plan at the National Gallery
As a board member of the National Gallery in the 1980s she blocks Margaret Thatcher’s plan to give an adjoining piece of property to developers, thus helping ensure the eventual construction of the museum’s Sainsbury Wing.
