This painted illustration was created for publication in a newspaper/illustrated magazine, probably the Penny Illustrated Paper. It shows the actress Mrs. Patrick Campbell (1865–1940) announcing 'The Relief' at the Royalty Theatre. The actress is dressed in a long sleeved, square necked gown which fits closely to her figure. She is standing on a stage and below her audience members are raising handfuls of bank notes. The artist is not identified and the image is not dated.
Born Beatrice Stella Tanner in Kensington she made her professional stage debut in 1888 at the Alexandra Theatre, Liverpool, four years after her marriage to Patrick Campbell. She continued to be known as Mrs.Patrick Campbell, even after the death of her first husband in 1900, and first achieved major success after starring in Sir Arthur Wing Pinero's play, The Second Mrs Tanqueray, in 1893, at St. James's Theatre. She continued to act, both on the stage, and screen, until her retirement in the 1930s.
This item is one of several theatrical drawings from a collection of sketches commissioned from contemporary artists to be printed in illustrated magazines. The collection was donated to the museum by Sir William James Ingram in 1914.
