O obrazie
William Blake painted Winter in the 1820s; the tall tempera panel on pine is in Tate’s collection in London. An old man walks through curling clouds, carrying a bare branch like a sceptre, with a bird on his shoulder. The figure illustrates William Cowper’s poem The Task. Reverend John Johnson commissioned the panel for the fireplace of his Norfolk rectory. It has faded, losing much of its former blue and gold.

His last day: a portrait of Catherine and hymns
On 12 August 1827 Blake worked relentlessly on his Dante series until the end; then, it is reported, he asked his weeping wife to stay as she was and drew her portrait (“you have ever been an angel to me”; the portrait is lost), began to sing hymns and verses, and at six that evening, after promising her that he would be with her always, died.
