O obrazie
Jan Steen shows a young woman preparing for bed in Woman at her Toilet, painted in 1655–1660 and now at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. She is taking off a stocking, and the pressure of its garter has left a mark beneath her knee. Her lifted skirt exposes her legs to the viewer. This degree of bodily exposure was not accepted throughout the picture's history. An added petticoat once concealed her thighs; this covering was still present a century ago, concealing the legs that Steen had originally shown.
Opis muzeum
Presented here is an intimate moment of a young woman undressing before going to bed. She is in the midst of pulling off a stocking, with the imprint of the garter still visible just below her knee. The raised skirt provides a glimpse along her legs. Such explicit nudity, however, was not always deemed acceptable; until a hundred years ago, an underskirt was painted over her thighs.
