O obrazie
David Teniers painted The Gamblers around 1640. The picture belongs to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Three players concentrate on their game: two townsmen in simple but tidy clothing and an officer whose finer dress and dagger distinguish his rank. Two peasants watch the players. Although preachers condemned games of chance, especially when money was at stake, Teniers presents the gathering without passing judgment on it. At the left, one of the men stands ready to make his next throw of the dice.
Opis muzeum
Two middle-class men (plainly, yet neatly dressed) and an officer (identifiable by his elegant clothing and
dagger) are absorbed in their game. Two peasants look on. The man standing at the left is just about to throw the dice. Games of chance, certainly when they involved money, were denounced from the pulpit. Yet here Teniers is not passing judgment: he is simply recording the scene.
