O rzeźbie

Boxer, dated 100–30 BC, raises his arms to tighten the leather straps once wrapped around his hands. The sculpture is in the Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland. Greek and Roman fighters used these bindings for protection. The straps have disappeared, but the curving torso and extended proportions remain typical of the late Hellenistic preference for elongated athletic bodies. On view in gallery 102C.

Opis muzeum

This boxer raises his arms to pull tight the thongs (now lost) that Greek and Roman boxers wound around their hands for protection. The sinuous body curve and long proportions are characteristic of the late Hellenistic period, when artists created more elongated versions of athletes and other classical figures.
