O dziele

Fine pen lines describe a fishing boat's rigging in Jan de Bisschop's Boats on Shore and in Water, drawn in 1648–1652 and now in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles. The small craft, called a weyschuit, rests ashore near rowing boats and a larger flat-bottomed vessel. De Bisschop made landscape studies during journeys around the Netherlands. On this sheet, the group of boats occupies only part of the surface, leaving broad areas of unmarked paper around the lightly drawn scene.

Opis muzeum

Jan de Bisschop made atmospheric landscape studies like this one on sketching trips throughout the Netherlands. Here he depicts a small fishing boat called a *weyschuit* with its rigging articulated in fine, filigree pen lines. The *weyschuit* rests on shore near a cluster of rowboats and a large, flat-bottomed vessel. The artist's copious use of blank paper invites viewers to imaginatively fill in the remaining scene.
