O obrazie

A woman and child bathe while rowers push away from shore in Marius Bauer's Benares of 1913, in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. The sunlit city stands beside the Ganges. Bauer's six months in India during 1897 supplied subjects for the rest of his life. Here he concentrates on an idyllic view of urban life, leaving hardship and poverty outside the scene. The bathing figures and departing boat occupy a city whose long history made it one of the world's oldest. On view in room 1.18.

Opis muzeum

In this painting, Bauer portrays life in Benares, one of the world’s oldest cities located on the Ganges River, in an idyllic setting. Bauer’s six- month trip through India in 1897 afforded him inspiration for the rest of his life. There is no room for suffering and povertyin his works of art. Instead, he focuses on the beauty of the sunlit city with a bathing woman and child, and rowers pushing off a sloop.
