O obrazie
Paulus Moreelse gave A Shepherdess a crown of roses in his 1630 painting in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. She belongs to the imagined world of Arcadia, where handsome shepherds and shepherdesses inhabited Dutch seventeenth-century verse. These poems praised uncomplicated rural life and supplied subjects for painters. Moreelse returned to Arcadian figures repeatedly, often painting them partly undressed and with flowers woven into their hair. On view in room 2.1.
Opis muzeum
This shepherdess comes straight out of Arcadia, a fairytale realm celebrated in 17th-century Dutch poems, inhabited by beautiful shepherds and shepherdesses. These verses glorified simple country life. Artists, including Paulus Moreelse, drew inspiration from
them. He painted several ‘Arcadian’ shepherds and shepherdesses, often semi-nude and adorned with flowers in their hair, like this rose-crowned shepherdess.
