Over het schilderij

Many of Renoir’s portraits of women should be seen as depictions of types rather than portraits of specific individuals. Renoir’s young Parisian lady has also been called La grisette, a term used to describe a woman from the working class. These young women were often seamstresses, laundresses or shop assistants in the cities. As a rule, women who worked as artists’ models also came from the working class. The word grisette implied looseness and vanity.

In het leven van Pierre-Auguste Renoir

Het hele leven
  1. 1870–1871

    Service in a cuirassier regiment

During the Franco-Prussian War Renoir was called up and served in a cuirassier regiment, where he learned to ride. On 10 March 1871 he was discharged from the army and returned to Paris in April.

  2. 1871

Incident on the Seine during the Commune

During the Paris Commune, Communards took Renoir, who was painting on the banks of the Seine, for a spy and nearly threw him into the river; the artist was recognized and saved by the Commune leader Raoul Rigault, whom Renoir had once helped.

  3. 1873

Founding the society of the future Impressionists

Renoir and his friends created the Anonymous Cooperative Society of Artists, Painters, Sculptors and Engravers — the future Impressionist group.

  4. 15 April – 15 May 1874

    First Impressionist exhibition

Renoir took an active part in organizing the exhibition and showed a pastel and six paintings, among them "The Dancer" and "La Loge" (The Theater Box). It was at his suggestion that the catalogue carried the title of Monet's painting "Impression, Sunrise," which gave rise to the word "Impressionists."

  5. 1876

    Second Impressionist exhibition

Hoping to secure an income from portrait commissions, Renoir showed mainly portraits at the second Impressionist exhibition.

  6. 1879

Triumph at the Salon of 1879

Presenting "Portrait of Madame Charpentier and Her Children" and the full-length "Portrait of the Actress Jeanne Samary," Renoir won universal recognition, and with it financial independence.
