This boxwood Virgin and Child statuette is made in the South Netherlands in Malines in ca. 1650.
Highly worked devotional carvings like this were produced in specialised workshops in Malines throughout the seventeenth century. The Virgin who is trampling on the devil, would originally have had a crown of precious metal.
