This atmospheric watercolour depicts the desolation of suburban London after dark. It was painted at the beginning of the 20th century and its subject, the night cityscape, became popular with 20th-century photographers.
We know very little about the artist, Matthew Webb. He was a pupil of the artist Edward Burne-Jones and was working around 1908.
