    Befriends LeWitt, Judd and Kusama

    Back in New York after Yale, she grows close to the young minimalist artists Sol LeWitt, Donald Judd and Yayoi Kusama. Her friendship with LeWitt lasts to the end of her life; they wrote to each other often.

  2. October 1969

    Diagnosis: a brain tumor

    In October 1969 Hesse is diagnosed with a brain tumor; within a year she undergoes three unsuccessful operations.

  3. 1970

    Interview on discrimination: excellence has no sex

    In a 1970 interview with Cindy Nemser she says that discrimination in art is beaten by art itself: excellence has no sex. She regarded her work as feminine but denied that it made feminist statements.
