"Танец с покрывалами", созданный Пикассо весной 1907 г., - одна из важных картин раннего кубизма. Образ обнаженной с драпировкой настолько захватил художника, что он посвятил ему целый ряд живописных работ, главной из которых является эрмитажная картина. Идея таинственной закрытости мира, остающегося до конца непознаваемым, характерная для испанской изобразительной традиции, - одна из важнейших идей, определяющих мироощущение Пикассо. Деформируя строение человеческого тела, Пикассо воссоздает его из отдельных подвижных плоскостей, покрытых энергичной штриховкой. Смещая и закручивая их, он делает зримым напряженное и завораживающее вращение танцовщицы. Она как медиум вся настроена на улавливание таинственной музыки, закрытые глаза - свидетельство полной растворенности в ее ритмах. В это вращение втянуты и фон, и драпировки. Плоскости пересекают друг друга, ломаются, дробятся, черные штрихи, покрывающие их, объединяют пространство и фигуру в единое целое.

    Picasso became a favorite of the collectors Leo and Gertrude Stein; at one of Gertrude Stein's gatherings in 1905 he met Henri Matisse — a lifelong friend and rival.

    Meeting Georges Braque

    Picasso met Georges Braque; together they became the founders of Cubism, a movement that rejected the traditions of naturalism.

    Beginning of Work with the Kahnweiler Gallery

    Picasso joined the recently opened Paris gallery of Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, who became one of the first champions of his work and of Cubism.

    Visit to the Ethnographic Museum

    At the Ethnographic Museum in Paris Picasso was struck by the masks of the peoples of Africa, Oceania, and Polynesia — an experience that influenced the formation of Cubism.
