Prostate surgeries and failing health
Over the next two decades Hopper's health falters, with several prostate surgeries and other medical problems, but in the 1950s and early 1960s he still creates several more major works.
1953
The “Statement” for the journal Reality
In 1953 Hopper submits to the journal Reality a handwritten note titled “Statement” on his philosophy: great art is the outward expression of an inner life in the artist, and one of the weaknesses of much abstract painting is the attempt to substitute the inventions of the intellect for a private imaginative conception.
1957
Rehn sells “Hotel Window” for $7,000
In 1957 Hopper's longtime dealer, Frank Rehn, sells “Hotel Window” (1956) to the collector Olga Knoepke for $7,000.
