Принадлежащая Эрмитажу картина относится к группе натюрмортов, написанных в Испании, где Пикассо провел лето 1906 г. До этого времени натюрморт как самостоятельный жанр не привлекал внимания художника. В последующие же годы он займет прочное место в его творчестве. Обращение к натюрморту свидетельствовало о возрастающем интересе к выявлению конструктивной сути изображенного. Композиция "Стеклянной посуды" проста и отличается классической ясностью. Каждый предмет существует в своей пространственной зоне, одновременно подчиняясь и строгому композиционному ритму, и логике сопоставления и взаимодействия. Пластическое начало выдвигается на первый план, что приводит к изменению колорита, который строится на использовании красно-кирпичных, желто-красных и серо-белых тонов. Эти тона, так же, как и ясная композиция придают натюрморту монументальность и единство.

Picasso settled in the Bateau-Lavoir residence in Montmartre; the sorrow of the Blue Period gave way to images of the theater and the circus — the Rose Period began.

Meeting the Steins and Matisse
Picasso became a favorite of the collectors Leo and Gertrude Stein; at one of Gertrude Stein's gatherings in 1905 he met Henri Matisse — a lifelong friend and rival.

At the Ethnographic Museum in Paris Picasso was struck by the masks of the peoples of Africa, Oceania, and Polynesia — an experience that influenced the formation of Cubism.
