Ivory was popular as a material for religious subjects, especially during the 17th and 18th centuries. German and Netherlandish artists were renowned for their dexterity in ivory carving. Their reliefs are masterpieces of composition and virtuosity. The relief was formerly ascribed to Dominicus Stainhart. The composition derived from an engraving by the Florentine artist Antonio Tempesta (1555-1630). Variants of it exist in ivory and boxwood respectively.
