About the sculpture
Zeng Peng draws heavily from Shiwan’s tradition of figurines and architectural ceramics. Imbued with a distinct sense of humour and personality, this imposing sculpture of Shen Gongbao, a character from the classic 16th-century Chinese novel Investiture of the Gods, references Cantonese opera. This vibrant performance tradition is notable for having a long-standing influence on the design of Shiwan figurines.
