Edward Onslow Ford1852This decorative statuette of a seated lion by Edward Onslow Ford is an example of the so-called 'New Sculpture', a British movement of the second half of the 19th century. It exhibits a sensitive naturalism, while drawing on Italian renaissance traditions. The object comes to the Museum directly from one of the artist's descendants, making it a particularly interesting acquisition.
Ford (1852-1901) was an English sculptor, who studied painting briefly in Antwerp and Munich before turning to sculpture in 1870.
