Het hele levenchildhood, until 1741
A double name in honour of Correggio and Raphael
His father, the Saxon court painter Ismael Mengs, gave his son a double name in honour of the artists he revered most — Correggio (Antonio Allegri) and Raphael — and gave him his first drawing lessons together with his sister, the future painter Therese Concordia Maron.
1741–1744
Rome with his father: antiquity, Raphael and Correggio
In 1741 his father moved the family from Dresden to Rome, where he copied works of Raphael in miniature for the Elector of Saxony; Anton Raphael stayed there until 1744, studying ancient art and the old masters, above all Raphael and Correggio, and training under Marco Benefial and Sebastiano Conca.
1745–1746
Court painter to the Saxon electors at seventeen
Back in Saxony, the seventeen-year-old Mengs was appointed court painter (Kabinettmaler) to the Saxon electors in Dresden.
