Cupid and Psyche (or Allegory of Eros and Psyche) is an oil-on-canvas painting by French painter François Gérard, from 1798. It was exhibited for the first time at the Salon of 1798. It is held in the Louvre, in Paris.

Thanks to David’s patronage Gérard received lodgings and a studio in the Louvre and a commission for a series of illustrations (La Fontaine, Virgil) for the publisher Didot.

Salon of 1798: “Cupid and Psyche”
“The First Kiss of Cupid and Psyche”, painted in 1797 with the money from Isabey, brought Gérard the fame he had longed for; the many portraits of high society that followed established his reputation.

Opens a literary salon
His salon, frequented by friends, patrons and prospective clients, welcomed eminent figures of the age; Germaine de Staël, George Canning, Talleyrand and the Duke of Wellington wrote about the charm of his society.
