Apunte compuesto de anverso y reverso. En el anverso, aparecen tres figuras, dos de ellas con sombrero, procediendo al secado de las uvas. La tercera figura, sin sombrero, maneja un objeto con el que extiende el fruto sobre una gran superficie plana. En el reverso: un trabajador tocado con sombrero inclinado hacia delante. El dibujo debe corresponder a los veranos de 1900 y 1901, en los que Sorolla se muestra interesado en el tema de la preparación de la pasa. En dichos años se fechan los lienzos Transportando la uva. Jávea y Encajonando pasas y otros temas referentes.

Grand Prix at the Paris Universal Exposition
“Sad Inheritance”, a huge canvas of crippled children bathing in the sea at Valencia under a monk’s supervision, brought Sorolla his greatest official recognition, the Grand Prix and a medal of honour, and his exhibit as a whole earned him nomination as a Knight of the Legion of Honour. After this picture he never returned to so overtly social a theme.

A medal of honour in Madrid for “Sad Inheritance”
The painting won the medal of honour at the National Exhibition in Madrid. Two of its luminous preparatory oil sketches Sorolla gave as gifts to the American artists John Singer Sargent and William Merritt Chase.
