Portret van een jonge vrouw

The woman in this delicate portrait must have been important enough to have her features immortalized and set in such a beautiful ornamental frame. Was she an actual person or an idealized historical figure? The Roman numerals, at lower centre, suggest it was probably part of a series of similar intimate portraits on paper, compiled and treasured by collectors from the Renaissance.
