Himmat 'Ali Khan, the main subject of this painting, was a friend of William Fullarton, a Scottish surgeon who lived in Murshidabad and later in Patna (in present-day Bihar). the painting bears an English inscription identifying the sitter and also the initials 'W.F.', suggesting that it was one of a set that belonged to Fullarton himself.
