Серия этюдов обнаженных мальчиков на фоне пейзажа — подготовительные штудии для картины «Явление Христа народу».
Бесконечное пространство фона, резко оторванного от первого плана, — воплощение «исторического времени» — вечной и неизменной природы. По справедливому замечанию М. М. Алленова, только ребенок, не знающий борения страстей, подобен натуре и может войти в пейзажи А. А. Иванова, не разрушив их структуры. В сочетании с пленэрными задачами, виртуозно и с большим опережением своего времени решаемыми художником в этюдах с обнаженными мальчиками, такая концепция отношения мира и человека, безусловно, отражает романтическое мировоззрение. Death of his father and teacher Andrei Ivanov
The painter's father and first mentor died: the painting professor Andrei Ivanovich Ivanov (1775–1848), who had been confirmed as adjunct professor of the Academy's history class in the year of his son's birth.
1858
Brings “The Appearance of Christ” to St Petersburg
Only in 1858 did Ivanov dare to send the painting to St Petersburg and come with it; the exhibition of the canvas with all its sketches and studies in a hall of the Academy of Arts made a strong impression, and his landscape studies were ahead of Russian painting of the day. The same year the artist died of cholera.
