Over het werk
Kruisiging van 23 Franciscaner monniken in Japan. De kruisen staan in twee lange rijen opgesteld. Soldaten lopen ertussendoor en steken hier en daar een gekruisigde met hun lans. Aan de hemel verschijnen Johannes de Doper (Christus?) en een grote groep engelen. Zij werpen palmtakken en lauwerkransen naar de martelaren. Onder de voorstelling een onderschrift in het Frans.

Declines to serve Louis XIII
King Louis XIII of France offers Callot a place at his court, but the artist declines; by one account, as a patriot of Lorraine he could not forgive the king for the devastation of his homeland by French troops.
