Over het werk
Hugh William Williams (1773-1829) was a Scottish painter of Welsh descent. He studied at Alexander Nasmyth's private drawing school in Edinburgh, and subsequently became a topographical painter. He became known for his romantic watercolour views of Scotland, and in 1811-12 he published engravings of views in the Scottish Highlands. Between 1816 and 1818 he travelled extensively in Italy and Greece, later exhibiting his Hellenic sketches and publishing his Travels in Greece and Views in Greece, 1827-29, which earned him the name 'Grecian Williams'.
