Scholar, poet, and painter Cheng Jiasui was one of the celebrated “Nine Friends of Painting” active around Suzhou during the late Ming period. This album unfolds as a sequence of tranquil landscapes rendered exclusively in monochrome ink, reflecting Cheng’s preference for pure ink over color. Literati painters believed that ink alone was capable of expressing the infinite richness of nature through variations of tone, texture, and brushwork, while revealing the artist’s character and cultivation. Rather than recording a specific place, the painting invites viewers on an imagined journey of contemplation full of craggy cliffs, rivers, bamboo groves, and solitary figures. The restrained compositions and atmospheric washes embody the literati ideal that painting should convey inner spirit and poetic sensibility above outward appearance.
