Over het werk

In een grote feestzaal strijden twee mannen met lansen tegen elkaar. Tussen hen in staat een hek ('barrière'). Rechts nog juist zichtbaar de triomfwagens met de Zon, Vulcanus en Juno, Minerva en Venus. Langs de wanden van de zaal tribunes vol toeschouwers. Links op de achtergrond op het balkon moet de hertogin van Chevreuse zich bevinden. Onder de voorstelling een onderschrift in het Frans. Deze prent is onderdeel van een serie illustraties voor een boek over de festiviteiten (o.a. een toernooi) in het hertogelijk paleis te Nancy op 14 februari 1627.

    King Louis XIII of France offers Callot a place at his court, but the artist declines; by one account, as a patriot of Lorraine he could not forgive the king for the devastation of his homeland by French troops.
