A prize place and a scholarship for Paris
A prize place for sculpture in the competition for the municipal prize of Toulouse in 1883 earned him a scholarship to continue his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris. Another account has him taking second place in 1884 in the competition for entry to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

Rents a studio in the Impasse du Maine
Bourdelle rented a modest studio at 16 Impasse du Maine, next to the painters Eugène Carrière and Jean-Paul Laurens, and worked there until his death. After several extensions it became the house-museum of Bourdelle.

Leaves the Academy without a scholarship and takes odd jobs
In 1886, having lost his scholarship, Bourdelle left the Academy. For a time he worked as an assistant in the studios of the sculptors Alexandre Falguière and Jules Dalou, who was his neighbour, and made a living by selling drawings to the Paris art dealers Goupil & Cie and by working for Theo van Gogh, the brother of Vincent.
