Intussen, in het leven van Honoré Daumier

Het hele leven
  1. 1864

    New Contract with Le Charivari

In 1864 Le Charivari offered Daumier a new contract; he returned to caricature to earn a living and found an appreciative public, producing 100 lithographs in a year for an income of 400 francs a month.

  2. 1865

    Settling in Valmondois

After spending the summer of 1865 in Valmondois with Théodore Rousseau, whose health was failing, Daumier soon left Montmartre for good and rented a small cottage in Valmondois, where he lived for the rest of his life.

  3. c. 1865 – 1866

    Onset of Failing Eyesight

Around 1865–1866 Daumier's eyesight began to fail; the condition progressed, though he continued to make drawings and poster sketches as late as 1872 and painted almost until his death.

  4. 1868

    Corot Gave Daumier a House

His loyal friend Corot secretly bought the house in Valmondois that Daumier was renting and presented it to him as a gift, writing in a letter: "I am not doing this for you, but to annoy your landlord."

“…Hundreds gathered for trip in white dresses carrying cloth bags, pails, candles—going to inaccessible & most venerable religious festival of Tres Reyes…Train started 7 A.M. with a hundred in a box car, people hanging on steps of platform even—engine went off tracks like some great sad silent dead horse of iron at noon, usual occurrence.” (See _Journals Early ‘Fifties Early ‘Sixties_ , N.Y., Grove, 1977, 1992, P.37.)
