11 September 2001
11 September: the flight to New York is diverted to Halifax
Richter was flying to New York on 11 September 2001, but because of the attacks, including on the World Trade Center, his plane was diverted to Halifax, Nova Scotia. A few years later he made one small painting specifically about the planes crashing into the towers: “September” (2005).

The retrospective “Forty Years of Painting” at MoMA
In 2002 the Museum of Modern Art in New York holds the retrospective “Forty Years of Painting”: 188 exhibits, an unprecedented number of works by a living artist for that museum.
