Finchingfield has been regarded as one of the most picturesque English villages since the early part of the twentieth century; indeed, it has been described as 'the most photographed village in England'. H. E. du Plessis's view of the village green with its cottages and church is by no means unique. The same view has adorned countless calendars, postcards, chocolate boxes and other souvenir items, all of which draw on the village's apparent impermeability to change.
