Anverso: Mujer dando agua al soldado A la izquierda, una repisa o muro bajo visto en esquina en el que reposa un cántaro. Frente a él, una mujer vista de espaldas, ligeramente de tres cuartos, vestida con falda larga y pañuelo que cae sobre la espalda, y que está llenando una jarra que tiene en la mano izquierda con el contenido de un cántaro igual al que está sobre el muro y que lo está sosteniendo un soldado a la derecha. Al soldado lo vemos de frente, ligeramente de perfil, con gorra a la cabeza y lo que parece un arma en el brazo izquierdo, pero que no se distingue bien por estar muy emborronado. En la zona derecha del papel, trazos breves y embarullados en los que no se distingue nada. Reverso: Estudios de toreros A la izquierda, torero visto de frente, avanzando. Va vestido con el traje de luces completo, con montera a la cabeza y el capote de paseíllo sobre el hombro izquierdo. A su derecha, esbozos de una figura. A la derecha del papel, otra figura de torero, del que no se ha terminado de dibujar la parte superior del cuerpo, pero sí las piernas.

    “A Research”: the Prize of Honour in Madrid

    Two paintings linking art and science, “Portrait of Dr. Simarro at the Microscope” and “A Research”, won Sorolla the Prize of Honour at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. He showed his friend Simarro in the laboratory, catching the contrast between the reddish-yellow light of a gas burner and the weak mauvish light from the window.

  3. 1900

    Grand Prix at the Paris Universal Exposition

    “Sad Inheritance”, a huge canvas of crippled children bathing in the sea at Valencia under a monk’s supervision, brought Sorolla his greatest official recognition, the Grand Prix and a medal of honour, and his exhibit as a whole earned him nomination as a Knight of the Legion of Honour. After this picture he never returned to so overtly social a theme.

    A medal of honour in Madrid for “Sad Inheritance”

    The painting won the medal of honour at the National Exhibition in Madrid. Two of its luminous preparatory oil sketches Sorolla gave as gifts to the American artists John Singer Sargent and William Merritt Chase.
