Pen and ink illustration created for publication in an illustrated newspaper or magazine, probably The Penny Illustrated Press. It shows ''Some of the Principle characters in a production of "The Water Babies" adapted by Mr. Rutland Barrington (1853-1922) for The Garrick Theatre. The sketch depicts six characters from the production, including Miss Isa Bowman as Tom, A Water Baby and Mr Webb Darleigh as Grimes.

The sketch is not signed, or dated but annotation on the rear indicates that it was drawn by the artist Dudley Cleaver .

This item is one of several theatrical drawings from a collection of sketches commissioned from contemporary artists to be printed in illustrated magazines. The collection was donated to the museum by Sir William James Ingram in 1914.
