Over het werk
Op de voorgrond staan Mozes en Aäron, eerstgenoemde met een staf in de geheven linkerhand. Voor hen langs trekken de Israëlieten tussen de geweken golven van de Schelfzee (een uitloper van de Rode Zee) door en verder door de bergen. Links op de achtergrond is te zien hoe de farao met zijn gevolg verzwolgen wordt door het terugvloeiende water. Onder de voorstelling twee regels Latijnse tekst.

Declines to serve Louis XIII
King Louis XIII of France offers Callot a place at his court, but the artist declines; by one account, as a patriot of Lorraine he could not forgive the king for the devastation of his homeland by French troops.
