Reconnaissance from balloons during the siege
During the siege of Paris by German troops in 1870 Nadar organised reconnaissance of the enemy army’s movements by means of balloons.

The airmail of besieged Paris
During the Siege of Paris in 1870–71 Nadar was instrumental in organising balloon flights carrying mail to reconnect the besieged Parisians with the rest of the world, thus establishing the world’s first airmail service.

After the Commune: a move to Sénart
The events of the Paris Commune badly upset Nadar’s finances, and he moved to Sénart, forty kilometres from Paris, from where he organised art exhibitions and wrote books.

The first Impressionist exhibition in his studio
In April 1874 he lent his photo studio to a group of painters to present the first exhibition of the Impressionists.
