Anverso: Estudio para Entre naranjos, Valencia. Apunte de dos figuras de medio cuerpo, de frente, agarradas por los hombros. La de la derecha levanta una guitarra, la de la izquierda parece ser una figura femenina peinada con rodetes. En la parte inferior rasguños insinuando una figura. Reverso: Apunte para composición. Apunte a base de trazos rápidos y confusos. Podría estar representando a una figura sentada en una tapia o poyete, y otra figura que, desde atrás, la coge por los hombros. Los trazos tenues que se superponen pertenecen al dibujo nº Inv. 12310, que se ha copiado por contacto.

Grand Prix at the Paris Universal Exposition
“Sad Inheritance”, a huge canvas of crippled children bathing in the sea at Valencia under a monk’s supervision, brought Sorolla his greatest official recognition, the Grand Prix and a medal of honour, and his exhibit as a whole earned him nomination as a Knight of the Legion of Honour. After this picture he never returned to so overtly social a theme.

A medal of honour in Madrid for “Sad Inheritance”
The painting won the medal of honour at the National Exhibition in Madrid. Two of its luminous preparatory oil sketches Sorolla gave as gifts to the American artists John Singer Sargent and William Merritt Chase.
